These three towns are along the same stretch of rural road near the towns of Nathrop and Buena Vista CO. I had been here before, back before the leaves had changed and noticed that this area would likely be full of color in the fall. I was right on the money. Aspen groves grow thick and large on both sides of the road along CR-292 all the way up to St. Elmo. Come in late September or early October to see the best colors. No need to search for great shots here, as the trees are plentiful right by the side of the road. Drive west from the tiny town of Alpine to the ghost town of St. Elmo.
This is a functioning ghost town, with some residence living here year round. The buildings are very old, photogenic, and historic. This is a popular destination. No need for a 4x4 to get here, it’s a well maintained dirt road year round, but from St. Elmo, one can drive on up to the ghost town of Tin Cup. You will need 4 wheel drive for this trip. Or you can drive back to Chalk Creek and hike up to Agnes Vaille Falls across from the campground. The falls are a short but steep hike, but with a nice pay off as the waterfall is a good 60 feet high or so.
Side trip worth noting: Just before the town of St. Elmo and after Alpine, hang a left onto CR-277 (4wheel drive is needed here) and drive up to the very cool ghost town structures of Hancock.
